Research Overview
SOuRCe is a conjoint unit of Sydney South West Area Health Service and the University of Sydney. The program incorporates cancer-based work including patient preferences for controversial cancer treatments, clinical trials of surgical procedures and the development and evaluation of support resources to improve patient outcomes. Research also includes health service utilisation and health economics.

2006/2007 Highlights
We were awarded a Cancer Institute NSW Health Services Research Program Grant that provides significant funding over three years for research to improve cancer care co-ordination. The research program includes studies to develop novel measures of care co-ordination and to develop a nurse-led, centralised, care co-ordination intervention for post-operative patients that will be evaluated in a large, multicentre randomised trial. We also will develop and evaluate novel software to assist care co-ordination in collaboration with the E-Health Research Centre of the CSIRO. Although the research will focus on people with colorectal cancer in the first instance, the research will be broadly applicable to other patient groups. This funding will enable us to build capacity in cancer services research by providing employment opportunities for early career researchers as well as funding a number of scholarships for postgraduate students.

We have completed studies of the quality of life and levels of unmet psychosocial need in the six months following surgery among patients discharged from RPAH following treatment for colorectal or upper gastrointestinal malignancies.

We completed a detailed analysis of data from the NSW Colorectal Cancer Care Study in collaboration with the Cancer Council NSW. This analysis demonstrated highly variable application of NHMRC guidelines for the management of people with colorectal cancer in NSW. Patient, surgeon and hospital factors that predicted concordance with key guidelines recommendations were investigated. Although there was almost uniform concordance with guidelines for antibiotic and thrombo-embolic prophylaxis for surgical patients, adjuvant therapies were under-utilised, particularly among older people. Using this population-based dataset, we also have investigated potential quality indicators for colorectal cancer surgery based on processes and outcomes of care.

We have been awarded a grant from the University of Sydney Cancer Research Fund to investigate surgeons’ and patients’ views of the usefulness of different formats of decision aids to enhance treatment decision-making for people with rectal cancer.

We have started a program of research to investigate surgical outcomes and quality of life following pelvic exenteration surgery for cancer.
