The Sydney Cancer Centre’s commitment to a multidisciplinary model of care is matched by the commitment to research driven treatment and quality outcomes. The SCC Research Program brings together over 100 research scientists and clinicians from RPAH, Concord Hospital, the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Research Institute (MASCRI), the Sydney Head and Neck Cancer Institute (SHNCI), the Sydney Breast Cancer Institute, the Surgical Outcomes Research Centre (SOuRCe) and the research scientists working on cancer in a number of Departments at the University of Sydney. In 2007, there were over 400 publications from Researchers of the SCC, which is evidence of the strong commitment the SCC has to supporting cancer research.
There are three broad types of research conducted at the Sydney Cancer Centre:
- Basic cancer research: for the layperson, involving "test tube" experiments
- Translational cancer research: applying discoveries to patient treatment and care
- Clinical cancer research: evaluating new ways of treating and caring for patients
The cancer research conducted at the Sydney Cancer Centre and its affiliates at the University of Sydney and Centenary Institute for Cancer Medicine and Cell Biology can be described by research programs or tumour or treatment types in the following broad categories:
